Bad experience at the groomer

I want to preface this post by stating that I hate this, I'm not a confrontational person. I'm not by nature someone who complains about customer service. I've taken Penny to various Petsmarts and have been pretty pleased overall. Typically the people are pleasant and the dogs look pretty good at a decent price. Myself having the majority of my jobs in Customer Service/Sales realm, I understand it can be very hard to make some people happy and just... a draining experience in general. I usually don't send food back, don't enjoy/get a thrill out of embarrassing or battling someone over a service, and so forth. That said, look at this face:

If you don't remember her, I posted about a month ago with some candids of Penny. From those pics you can see that she normally has very large round eyes. The area around the iris that's normally white is very irritated and red (she wouldn't look the other way, the outside portion of her eye is even a good bit redder than what you see in these photos). Also it's very hard to see with her blue hair/blue skin combo but the hair is cut VERY close to the skin around her eyes and on top of her nose. She has long eye lashes on one eye, and short cut eyelashes on the irritated eye.

We also took my new puppy Dharma in for her "puppy cut." Her coloring (solid black) makes it a lot easier to see how close they got. For reference, a couple weeks ago, she looked like this:

She's gotten a bit bigger, but for the most part still looked the same. And now... well, on a purely cosmetic scale as she doesn't seem to be injured, it's worse than Penny.

I don't even know. When we picked them up, there was 2 other people behind us to pick up so we put a leash on Penny and I carried the puppy outside and put them into their carriers to go home. I noticed that at a glance their faces looked pretty closely cropped, but it wasn't until I got home that I saw that Penny won't open her eye all the way. She's also being really clingy to my mom. If things aren't looking up by tomorrow morning, we'll get her to a vet.

What I'm curious about is; what would you do? Call and complain? Ask for a refund? Try to get them to cover the costs of getting her eye checked out and any meds Penny may need? I don't want to get anyone "in trouble," and I know the hair will grow back, but I think the groom itself is pretty bad (long eyelashes on one eye, short on the other, hair shaved down to the skin on the FACE). But again, I'm not out for blood.

p.s. Neither dog was matted. We have our dogs groomed pretty frequently and so far neither has hair that's prone to matting + we brush. I know that the puppy may be wiggly considering it's her first grooming, but Penny has been groomed several times and we've never had complaints of her being hard to groom. Mostly any comments were to the contrary.

First, your pups are super cute! Even with the bad grooming job.

Second, those are HORRIBLE grooming jobs! I've had my Tzus both shaved down really short a number of times in the summer, and still I've NEVER had a groomer get them that short. It looks like someone inexperienced (and potentially angry) got a hold of your dogs.

If Penny's eye is still red tomorrow and if she still can't open it, I would definitely take her to the vet. It sounds like they may have been traumatized by the whole incident, so I wouldn't necessarily take them back to Petsmart, but I would definitely take these photos in and show them to the manager, especially if Penny has eye problems because of this awful grooming experience.

I am so sorry you and your babies have to go through this. Please give them some extra snuggles from me.

Okay, I just showed this to my husband, and he thinks you definitely need to get the dog to the vet since the vet knows how to check an eye out. He thinks you need to make Petsmart pay for the vet bill. We're both so upset for you. This is just awful!

Okay first those are like you said horrible groom jobs!
I don't even think a trainee would do that bad of a job at least none I've worked with. I think its someone who just doesn't care about their job or was in way to big of a hurry. I don't work at petsmart I have worked with ppl who have* and also was trained by them(i have worked at petco). Usally they are really big about quantity. And they also have stupid rules, like a groomer can't bathe a lab! even if there is no bather in the shop at the time they gotta refuse the dog. rediculous! sorry that has nothin to do with it.

But think of it this way, you pay us to do a service and we are suppose to do that service to the best of our ability. if you go and get your* hair cut i'm sure you'd be pretty upset and want to talk about or complain about it to your stylist that you aren't happy. at least i would and i'm not a complainer or picky person eaither. i hate doing so. but with your pooches i'd take them back tomorrow asap before they can say oh why'd you wait a week/two!? we get ppl that did that all the time and it was bullshit.sorry.at least call us so we know about the situation before you have to wait so long for time to come in.

so tomorrow when you get a chance take your dogs in there and complain. its your right. you paid them to do something you coulda done at home. How is that fair? they took the clippers right along the nose, which they aren't suppose to do! i have itty bitty baby scissors for the corner area of the eyes with ball ends that i use.

you don't want the eye to get irritated. and also if you go in they petsmart that is should* cover the vet bill for your dog to see a vet for that eye. i'd do it! for real. petsmart will* pay for it so don't let them tell you otherwise! they've paid for someoen else who nicked a dog and the dog had to have stitches. accidents happen yes, and if so if they need to seek a vet its important that they do.

dont worry about it. i view the grooms as a carless groomer. you don't want this to happen to another dog so go in complain and let them keep an eye on the groomer so that the groomer will take more care in what they are doing.

also if you find a groomer you like, stick with the person ask for a card so you can request em. ppl like that and it also helps your dogs when they are with the same groomer time after time, the groomer and the dog than get to bond and know eachother and how eachother work.

i've had grooms tthat weren't up to my par, some dogs are awful and you can only do the best you can, but in order to get that clipper right up around that puppies face 1. your puppy was fantastic! and than if it was the case the job shouldn't of been that shitty, sorry. or 2. the puppy was held down! if she was wiggly and if it ws that case that shoulda never been done in the first place.

sorry i rambled. but plz just take them back in there asap. and make petsmart pay for the vet care. they'll eaither or at least should eaither send you to banfeild or have you go to your vet and refund you.

Also if I do have a customer and they don't tell me they are unhappy as they leave, but not unhappy enough to not want to come back to me again they'll tell me at the next groom. Than i'll usally try to do something to make up for it. like upgrade shampoos and give em the full spa that cost extra, dremmel the nails which takes more time cost extra just anything to make em happy and let em know with an extra i'm sorry they weren't so happy. cos well its my job to make them happy.

and she may also have hair in her eye and could be why its not wanting to open and its watering, but as shih tzu owners we all know thta is a very important concern with the breed. to keep the eyes clean. so the groomer was also careless with that.

That has got to be the worst grooming I have seen on a Shih Tzu ever. I would ask for money back as well as have them pay for your baby to be seen at the veterinarian for the eye considering there could be an abrasion which may need eye meds as well as antibiotics.

And if someone has to get in trouble then that is unfortunately what needs to happen. A bad cut is one thing...injuring a dogs eye/skin is serious, even if on accident.

Anyway, hope you baby gets to feeling better soon

I agree with what everyone above said. Poor Penny. I hope her poor little eye feels better soon.

I'm sorry, but my friend worked for Petsmart and I think they're awful. It's all about getting the most dogs done in the fastest time for the most cash. The shampoos are crap and they often don't fix busted equipment. My friend had chemical BURNS on her arms from them after working there; she said the other groomers got it too after the hydrosurge broke and they had to use the shampoos full strength. She worked there for two years and they never fixed it in that time, for whatever reason. The groomers only get four weeks of basic training before they're sent in to start grooming. So either a newb or someone running out of time got your pups, I'm guessing. I would go and get a refund and go elsewhere.

i understand how you feel about confrontation - i don't like it much either. but i think you should make a complaint, if only because it seems that Penny was injured. a bad grooming job is one thing (like you said, it'll grow back) but mishandling your dog is another. perhaps it'll stop it from happening to someone else's dog.

i also agree with many of the other people who commented - stay away from PetsMart. a professional groomer who will handle your pups with care and do exactly what you ask is SO worth the extra few dollars. i know money is tight for everyone these days, but for the sake of our furry loved ones, it's worth budgeting for a really good groomer. also, you don't want your dogs to become fearful - you want them to like going to be groomed!
